The Five Hymns to Arunachala are the earliest poems of the Maharshi except for a few short verses. They were written around Knowing this, a few unscrupulous men began to pose as the Ramana group and collected the food meant for them.
To get over this difficulty, the need for a distinctive prayer-song was felt. His devotees were awaiting for the next lines but nothing more came. One day, the Maharshi went around the Hill alone.
Those who sing or even listen to this hymn are overwhelmed with joy.
The Maharshi has once humorously remarked that this hymn has fed us for many years. He tried several times to ignore them, but they would not go away. Again and again the words persisted, until at last he gave in and wrote them down. Palaniswami was walking behind me with a pencil and paper.
That day before I got back to Virupaksha, I wrote six of the eight verses. The next day Narayana Reddi came. When he insisted on taking the poems I told him he could do so and could publish the first eleven verses as one form of poem. The remaining six verses were in a different metre.
These two poems shine as a divinely inspired commentary on Truth that inspires and instructs seekers. Look, there it stands as if insentient. Mysterious is the way it works, beyond all human understanding. From my unthinking childhood, the immensity of Arunachala had shone in my awareness. But even when I learnt from someone that it was only Tiruvannamalai, I did not realize its meaning.Invocation by Poet Sri Muruganar This joyful Marital Garland of Letters which resembles a beam of the rays of the rising sun was sung by the noble sage Ramana, the ocean of compassion, with the object of removing the delusion of the devotees who sought his grace.

Here is a lovely joy-filled video of verses excerpted from the Thiruvasagam, which is a Tamil sacred chant sung for Lord Shiva and written by Manikkavachakar in the 8th century.
Because of that people used to call him Vaadavurar. He was sent to school very early. He read religious books, absorbed the lessons therein, and became noted for his devotion to Siva, as also his kindness to living beings. Though he performed the duties of a minister with tact and integrity, he had no desire for material happiness.
His mind was always absorbed in spiritual matters. Feeling convinced that for the attainment of jnana, the grace of the guru is essential, he kept on making enquiries about it. Once the Pandya king directed the minister to buy a few good horses and bring them to him. As he was already in search of a guru, Manikkavachakar felt that it was a good opportunity and started with his retinue, carrying with him the required amount of gold. He visited all the temples on the way and reached a village called Tiruperundurai.
For about a year before that, Parameswara had assumed the form of a school teacher and was teaching the poor children of the village seated on a street pial, near the temple. He had his meal which consisted of only cooked green vegetables, in the house of his pupils everyday by turn. Well aware of the mental maturity of Manikkavachakar, Iswara anxiously awaited his arrival. By the time Manikkavachakar came, Iswara assumed the form of a Siddha Purusha realised soul and sat under a Kurundai yellow amanth tree within the temple.
Many sannyasis had gathered around him. Manikkavachakar came to the temple, had darsan of the Lord in the sanctum sanctorum, and while doing pradakshina around the temple, saw the Siddha Purusha. He was thrilled at the sight and tears welled up in his eyes.
Arunachala Shiva (Chanting)
Spontaneously, he lifted his hands above his head in salutation and prostrated at the feet of Iswara. He then got up, and prayed that he, a humble being, may also be accepted as a disciple. Having come to earth solely to bestow grace on Manikkavachakar, Iswara, through His mere look, gave him jnana upadesa initiation into knowledge. Manikkavachakar felt indescribable happiness and the upadesa given by Iswara took deep root in his heart.
With folded hands and tears of joy, Manikkavachakar went round the guru, offered salutations, stripped himself of all his official dress and ornaments, placed them near the guru and stood before him with only a kaupina on. A deeply felt inspiration resulted in his spontaneously composing and singing beautiful and moving devotional songs in praise of his guru. His mission fulfilled, the Lord disappeared. This outpouring of devotion by Sadhguru Shri Brahma, a yogi of enormous proportions who walked this land about a century ago, captures the complete surrender that he experiences for the Adi Guru.
Listen and let the effortless jive get you swaying. Three forces. Three qualities. Three devas. A trio, seemingly separate on the surface, but go a little deeper, and you will find a seamless union. Bridge the gap between trinity and unity, and you will find Mahadeva. One of the most well known Sanskrit chants, Nirvana Shatakam was composed by Adi Shankaracharya himself over a thousand years ago. Damaru is the musical instrument of Adiyogi, the first yogi.
He is also the Adi Guru or the first Guru. The yogic lore says that on the day of Guru Purnima, he decided to offer the science of yoga to his seven disciples, who are, now, celebrated as the Saptarishis. Originally performed during a Guru Pournami Satsang with Sadhguru. This mantra, when uttered with awareness, helps purify the system and bring meditativeness. Aum Namah Shivaya, which is held as the Mahamantra in certain cultures, has something to do with the panchaksharas, or the five elements in nature.
This chant has to do with the more gentle forms of Shiva. In contrast to his wild and crazy forms, Shambo is a gentler, beautiful form of Shiva. It can be a key to open you up and to break limitations.
Composed by Sounds of Isha on the occasion of Dakshinayana or the summer solstice, the momentous time when Adiyogi chose to become the Adi Guru, the first guru, to transmit yoga to his seven disciples. This number is not arbitrarily fixed; it has a significance of its own. We have the five karmendhriyas senses of action and the five jnaanendhriyas senses of perception ; we have also praanas the five vital energies or airs to sustain us. Then we have the five koshas sheathsenclosing the Divine Spark that is the Reality.
These total up to twenty. Hence the recitation of Om twenty one times purifies and clarifies all these twenty components and makes man the twenty-first entity, ready for the final merger with Reality.
The Jeevathathwam life-principle merges with Parathathwam the Supreme Reality. The jeevathathwam may be pictured as a rider on the twenty-headed horse. That completes the process of clarification and purification. The first call for shaanthi peace chant is for the purity of the aadhibhouthik body part of the Self. The second call is for the purity of the aadhidhaivik the mind.

The hill is referred to in the Puranas as the oldest hill on earth, and is regarded as the heart of the earth owing to its great sanctity. Within this town there is the 24 acre Arunachaleswarar Kovil, one of the largest Temples in India and around 2, years old. It is indeed the abode of Lord Siva. Could there be any other place which is its equal?
At this place, the conscious substance of the Universe takes on the traits of union between Siva and Sakti with the hill as centre in which all forces counterbalance. Lord Brahma, the creator, and Lord Vishnu, the preserver each claimed superiority over the other.
Upon hearing this, Vishnu took the form of a boar and dug into the depths of the Earth, seeking the beginning of the light. But he was to return disappointed. He too was about to give up in despair when, by chance, he happened upon a falling flower and embarked upon a conversation with it. Upon the request of the gods Vishnu and Brahma, Siva established himself as the Arunachala Hill and also as a small Lingam at the eastern foot of the hill so that all could worship both as emblems of Siva.
Performing pradakshina of Arunachala is considered to be beneficial in all ways. Typically, pradakshina is done in bare feet, with the Hill on the right. That means that the whole world is condensed into this Hill. The circuit round the temple of Arunachala is equally good; and self-circuit i. So all are contained in the Self. This meditation is the highest circuit pradakshina.
One should walk slowly like a woman who is in the ninth month of pregnancy. So one goes round keeping to the left-edge of the path. Going round the hill one gains in health and vigour. The dust from the feet of such a person, carried and deposited in towns far away effects immeasurable purification. Tradition has it that even today a number of siddhas are living on the hill.
There are eight lingams located at the eight directions, which provides an octagonal structure to the town of Tiruvannamalai. Once a year, the top of Arunachala is alighted with a fire that can be seen for miles around.
It is the god Shiva, who is manifesting himself as a blazing pillar of light,In the Deepam Festival is also reflected the union of Shiva and Parvati in the deity Ardhanarishwara. Once the goddess in play covered the eyes of her Lord Shiva with her hands, and thus the whole world was plunged into darkness.
